History

John R. Shultz Funeral Home has been serving Lykens area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

The John R. Shultz Funeral Home started out as the Reiff and Helt Funeral Home circa 1917. It was purchased by Roy W.D. Schaffstall, 1st cousin to the Helt’s and grandfather to John R. Shultz. In 1968 John M. Shultz, son-in-law of Roy W.D. Schaffstall was given the opportunity to become a funeral director and work in the family business and thus the funeral home became known as the Schaffstall and Shultz Funeral Home. After Roy’s passing in 1975 the funeral home became the John M. Shultz Funeral Home. In 1979 John R. Shultz, son of John M. Shultz and grandson of Roy W.D. Schaffstall was given the same opportunity as his father. He became a licensed funeral director, making him the third generation to run the family business. Throughout the three generations LeeAnn Shultz daughter of Roy, wife of John M. and mother of John R. was the secretary, receptionist and the voice on the phone. The Funeral Home through three generations and with its extended family have been serving Lykens and the surrounding area for over 100 years.

As a third generation funeral director and owner of the John R. Shultz Funeral Home in Lykens, I was raised in a family where compassion, respect and sympathy toward others in their time of need was of the utmost importance.
